Consistent Active Connectivity, in Stereo

“To Actively A and B or not to B, in Stereo – that is the question.” Enrico Shakespeare, ye-olde scribe of Berlin

There’s nothing new about ABY boxes. They’re a very commonly used accessory and a staple part of many setups out there. But if they are so common, then (until we launched our passive Stereo ABY) why was it so difficult to find one in a stereo format that’s well built, noise-free AND affordable? This is a question we kept encountering as we use many stereo devices daily here at KMA, plus we know that a lot of users are just as mesmerised by the wide sonic worlds of stereo as we are. So, we made a killer stereo ABY switcher to use here at our workshop. In the process we found it so useful, so we decided to make the original STEREO ABY available to the world too in a pedal format.

However, despite our passive boxes gracing thousands of rigs the world over, the Active STEREO ABY takes things a little further and is ideal for those who like to use the Y splitting or combining functions – at least with some signals that don’t always play nicely together, due to often differing impedances between connected devices. With KMA’s high quality active buffer, the pedal can also help eliminate level mismatches or even signal loss, if used with long cable runs.

Whether you’re looking to switch or combine a Stereo input signal between two separate destinations or switch or combine two separate Stereo input signals into a single stereo output without signal loss, the KMA Machines STEREO ABY pedal is a dependable little helper for your tonal quest – the fate of your Stereo signals is in your hands!

  • Active Stereo / Dual-Mono ABY pedal
  • Sends a Stereo input to two separate stereo outputs, separately or combined via regular ¼ inch/6.35mm Jacks
  • Sends two Stereo inputs to one stereo source, separately or combined
  • 180° Phase switch, helps to remove mismatches
  • Active silent CMOS-based soft switching, heavily reduces mechanical noise with virtually silent signal bypass
  • Omnidirectional for 2 into 1 or 1 into 2 operations
  • A&B>Y or Y>A&B switch, allows for precise directionality
  • Distinct LED colours, to indicate your selected signal path at a glance
  • Durable compact enclosure for years of reliable switching
  • Top-mounted jacks, will fit into any setup
  • Made in Berlin, Germany

Just need to work in Mono? Then the KMA Active ABY is for you!

In-depth Description

KMA’s ABY Series has been created with a focus on durability, reliability, simplicity and hassle-free operation.

The Active STEREO ABY pedal features a fully active design along with our active silent CMOS switching. While that might be a hell of a wordy mouthful (or even sound scary to some), what it means practically is that the pedal is completely silent in operation. This has the added benefit of allowing for all sorts of hookups helping to prevent signal loss. Being active, it can also minimise any potential level mismatch between hookups.

Switch Away

Switch Away

It can be electronically difficult to achieve this kind of switching without interference between the switching and signal paths, but by employing our own implementation of this switching technology, not only are the mechanical switching noises greatly reduced, but the risk of any pesky loud clicks and pops that has plagued so many boards and has haunted so many musicians, since the inception of ABY boxes when switching, is virtually eliminated.
Colour Your World
Colour Your World

The bears eyes light up – how awesome is that!? Okay, besides just looking cool and fulfilling our boyhood dreams of an army of robot bears with freaking lasers as eyes, the 3 distinct LEDs actually serve a practical purpose; to quickly and easily show you what signal path you’ve selected at a glance.

Red for A, Yellow for B and Blue in the centre for A&B.

Phase and Direction
Phase and Direction

With the A&B>Y or Y>A&B switch you can use the device in either direction, for sending to different sets of amps, synths or effects or for switching inputs/ instruments/ devices into your chain via the Y channel, for even more creative combining or splitting. While the Phase switch allows for flipping the A Channel by 180°. This can prevent signal cancellation and tone issues that can happen in some setups when combining or splitting signals.

But wait… there’s more!

This pedalboard-friendly device seamlessly integrates with your existing setup. It’s compact, rugged, lightweight, durable, affordable and can be powered via a standard 9V DC power supply, making it convenient for all walks of sonic life.

What’s not to like?

So, will you choose A or B? With the KMA Machines Active STEREO ABY pedal, all you have to do is choose your path and perform!

Tips and tricks

With the Active STEREO ABY there are some very creative yet simple scenarios you can use with effects. Here are a few examples to get you going:

1. Easily switch or combine two independent stereo signal chains, either for parallel processing or comparison.

2. Output to a stereo amp or cab-sim connected to A, while B is connected to a recording device to allow for later re-amping of the unprocessed signal.

3. Send two stereo devices, such as keyboards or drum machines, to a single Stereo output for processing.
